Ingredients to Avoid in Beauty Products

In terms of scalp and haircare, the ingredients in your beauty products can make a significant impact on your skin’s health. Unfortunately, many mainstream products still contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin, dry it out, and even contribute to cancer.

While some harmful ingredients require long-term exposure to pose significant risk; others, even in small doses can create major problems quickly. It's important that you always look at product labels and make decisions that feel right for you and your family.

Here are some of the ingredients you'll want to avoid when choosing products for your skin and hair:

1. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is a detergent commonly used in shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers to create that foamy lather we associate with "getting clean". While it’s great at removing dirt and oils, it also strips the skin of its natural moisture, leading to dryness and irritation. Over time, this can weaken the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it more vulnerable and more sensitive/reactive.

Watch Out: Any compound or chemical that ends in -eth is harmful and should be avoided

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a harsher version of SLES and is found in many cleansers, toothpaste, shampoos, and detergents. It is responsible for creating the foamy lather in these products, but it also causes significant irritation for many people. SLS can lead to contact eczema, canker sores, and even mouth ulcers - especially when used around the mouth or eyes. It can also disrupt the skin’s natural oil production, leading to long-term irritation and dryness.

3. Cocamide MEA

Cocamide MEA (Monoethanolamine) is derived from coconut oil and is often added to beauty products as a foaming agent and detergent. While it’s less harsh than SLS, it still has the potential to dry out your skin. It can also cause lung irritation when inhaled in spray-form, and prolonged contact can lead to contact dermatitis.

Watch Out: Anything that has DEA, TEA, MEA or similar should be voided

4. Quaternium-15

Quaternium-15 is a preservative used in many beauty products to prolong shelf life. However, it releases formaldehyde - a known carcinogen - which can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and is considered a hormone disruptor. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and blisters, making it a controversial ingredient in personal care items.

5. Dimethicone

Dimethicone is a silicone-based ingredient used in many hair care products to add shine and smoothness. While it does coat the hair, it doesn’t actually provide moisture. Over time, it can leave hair feeling dry and brittle. On the skin, Dimethicone can clog pores and potentially lead to acne, blisters, and contact dermatitis.

6. Zinc Pyrithione

Zinc Pyrithione is commonly used in anti-dandruff shampoos for its antifungal properties. While it can be effective for treating dandruff, it may also cause irritation and excessive dryness. Common side effects include contact dermatitis, burning sensations, and blisters, particularly on sensitive scalps or skin.

What Can You Do?

  1. Check the Ingredients: Always read labels to identify these harmful ingredients. Many companies now label products as "paraben-free," "sulfate-free," or "phthalate-free," making it easier to spot safe alternatives.

  2. Choose Clean Beauty Brands: Look for brands that commit to using safe, non-toxic ingredients. There are plenty of clean beauty brands that avoid harmful chemicals while offering high-quality products. Here are some of my favorites:

    1. Innersense

    2. Oway & Arete

    3. Reverie

  3. Switch to DIY: If you're interested in reducing your exposure to chemicals, consider making your own beauty products using simple ingredients like jojoba oil, aloe vera, and essential oils.

By becoming more conscious of what’s in your beauty products, you can protect your skin, health, and the environment—all while still looking your best. So, next time you shop for beauty products, keep an eye out for these harmful ingredients, and make the switch to safer alternatives!
